Close catching
Slip fielders wait beside the wicketkeeper for edges from the bat. Gully is a related catching area between slips and point. Short leg is positioned near the striker on the leg side.
Saving runs
Point, cover, mid-off and mid-on often stop firm drives and singles. Square leg and fine leg cover leg-side strokes. Deep fielders stand near the boundary to restrict fours and sixes.
Why the field keeps moving
Captains adjust fielders according to the bowler, batter, match phase and available runs. A wicket-taking field may use more catchers, while a defensive field protects boundaries.
Reading a bowling plan
A bowler may target the off stump with close catchers or bowl shorter with leg-side protection. These choices should fit the rules about fielding restrictions.
A useful viewing exercise
Watch one over and note where the fielders move after each delivery. Look for a connection between the previous shot and the next ball.
