Reading the team total
A total written as 175/6 means 175 runs for six wickets. The innings can finish because the scheduled overs end, the target is reached, or the batting side is all out.
Legal balls and overs
One over usually contains six legal deliveries. The notation 12.3 means twelve completed overs and three legal balls, not twelve-point-three overs.
Wides and no-balls
A wide adds at least one extra run and normally must be bowled again. A no-ball also incurs a penalty and does not count as a legal delivery. Rules about a subsequent free hit depend on the format and playing conditions.
Byes and leg byes
Byes are runs taken when the ball passes the batter without touching bat or body. Leg byes can be scored from contact with the body under the laws. They go to extras rather than the batter.
Strike rate and economy
A batter’s strike rate is runs per 100 balls faced. A bowler’s economy rate describes runs conceded per over. Match context affects how each number should be interpreted.
